Ready to move on to bigger things in my career. I have been looking at STEM masters in my field of interest in the UK and the best are charging £20k for tuition alone, then you need to pay for living expenses too.
£20k??? This is insane to me. I know we can get postgrad loans for £11k from the UK government, but I really don't want to add to my student debt. I also would be interested in going to the USA for a masters, but I imagine the costs there must be astronomical.
How does anyone afford this?
I got scholarships at a TU in Europe. They paid me on top of free education as a research assistant and I got them include my own office and HRA which is common in India. They obliged. Never been a fan of paying for my education. How are you on your academic records? You can write a dope essay for these scholarships.
Also, my friend literally got an agent sent in good faith by many European countries to India so look if you can enlist the service of these parties. Always meet them in person.
I got a degree in CS. My friend did PM. They even got her placed. And tons of internship. My field asks for specific skills which I had developed solely with YT videos and doing things myself.
Hope that helps.
Education cost is different in the US. I paid $25k for my masters over two years while working full time (making >$100k/year). Some masters programs at other schools were upwards of $60k which I wouldn’t pay.
The only two reasons I would suggest a masters are 1) it’s the only way into a field you’re certain you want, or 2) you have the money and are not expecting a specific financial return. For me it was #2, I’m already working in that field, it enhances my expertise, and the expense wasn’t a burden.
Could there be a path forward into your STEM career of interest through working a few years? Or can you keep working part/full time to finance your degree? I agree that taking out loans for an aspirational career switch is dangerous, and it’s better to gain either more money or more relevant experience before taking the leap.
Good luck and leveling up your career is worth it!
I applied for financial aid in grad school and they covered most of my expenses. However, I did pay a small portion out of pocket ($2,500 per semester). I am forever grateful.
i think the one i want to go to, the tuition is 22k ):
I got a free masters 🤷🏼♀️ through my PhD program
