Hi everyone! I’m currently working for a startup that’s on its last legs. The cofounders are not being transparent about the fact that there’s no product market fit, and that the company is not viable. Initially they drew a lot of attention and leveraged their flashy vc networks. Both cofounders have attended multiple elite schools. Now, they’ve grown increasingly frantic and toxic, blaming their looming failure everything but the truth.
As you all probably know, a lot of startups are being exposed by the economic downturn. Working here for the past few weeks has been brutal. Survival of the fittest. I’m very very quickly trying to position/brand myself as I suspect have only a few weeks before the pink slip. I’m terrified, but I’m now working on articles, as well as projects at work which would help with my branding.
I would love some stability in my life, and the past 3yrs have been painfully traumatic. This job seemed like a lifesaver and I did buy in initially. I need to get an offer in a month latest, so my life doesn’t splinter apart.
Are their any tips from anyone in the recruitment/HR space or even if you’re not, you’ve tried methods to get attention from the right recruiters, and generally increase my chances apart from the branding I’ve mentioned?
I’ve applied for a lot of jobs without getting a callback. I’ve been approached by recruiters whose clients have now frozen those positions. Ideally I would love to work for FAANG companies in a legal ops/ risk management role. Or any solid startup where I can grow for the next 2-3yrs. I’m currently having to do the workload of 3 people, while being nitpicked, micromanaged, criticized and manipulated. I suspect my boss knows I’m only there because I haven’t gotten anything else. Bc no one with options would work under such conditions. The sooner I leave, the more likely it’d be in cordial terms. I can see my boss is escalating in terms of pointing the finger at employees instead of literally rounding up the company and cutting their losses. Another employee recently confided in me about how the company’s crumbling from within.
Any advice is appreciated. I hope this is within the rules!❤️
Apply like it's your job. Aim for 50ish applications a day. Make an account with 1 job search software (I like indeed) and upload your resume, references and cover letter- quick apply all the jobs. *If a job takes you to the company's website, be sure to apply on the company website AND search the company website for other job listings they have. Ask coworkers or former co-workers you trust to be your references. *Make sure your cover letter is about YOU, you can talk about a specific project or event to highlight your skills, but a cover letter CAN be generic. You don't have to rewrite them for every job Best of luck! It is a numbers game- you'll make it through
Time to go scorched earth.
- grab all contacts from the rolodex for later
- retain all projects, documents etc you worked on so you can show other interviews
- network!!!
- create different versions of your resume to target your next spot
- leverage your current position for the next one
- brainstorm any contacts in your network you should alert to your availability
- research their competitors and see if they're hiring
Good luck!!
One really great place to find jobs in tech is on Twitter. Not sure if you have a profile but I would perform a quick search on there. A lot of startups and recruiters utilize it to announce jobs. This way you can reach out via DM to the hiring manager or recruiter who is posting the job. I work in tech and found my current role at a large tech company this way. I also see many FAANG (technically MANGA 🤣) postings there too. Good luck out there!
Well you are higher on the ladder in the corporate world than me, but I can't imagine being so worried about losing a job. If I lost a job I'd get immediate benefits and could probably take a year off not searching for work and be fine. Doesn't your society doesn't take care of its workers and have any fallbacks at all?... Work like hell, I guess.
