BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — They attend the same classes with access to the same programs, and even come from the same families. But girls consistently are outperforming boys, graduating at higher rates at public high schools around the country.
The gap between them is wide, often as wide as the achievement gap between students from affluent and low-income families, a problem that officials have tracked closely for years. But the reasons why boys are falling short are not as clear.
Interviews with students, educators and researchers point to several factors. Men generally can earn the same wages as women with less education. But boys also are more likely to face suspensions or other discipline knocking them off track, and they don’t pursue help as often when they face mental health challenges.
The U.S. government doesn’t require states to report graduation data by gender the way they must break it out by racial and ethnic groups and for children with disabilities, English language learners and homeless students. But in every state reporting high school graduation rates by gender, research shows female students graduate at higher rates.
More than 45,000 fewer boys than girls graduated high school in 2018, according to an estimate by researcher Richard Reeves based on data available from 37 reporting states.
That year, about 88% of girls graduated on time compared with 82% of boys, according to Reeves, who this year left the Brookings Institution to launch the American Institute for Boys and Men. The gap was still 6 percentage points in 2021, according to a follow-up analysis this year.

I wonder if boys feel that they don't have study or achive education because the world caters to them on a silver platter. Girls on the other hand know education gives them a leg up in a patriarchal society.
Girls aren't at fault why boys start porn and gaming so young and destroy their brain way too early.
Girls and women are smarter and more hardworking than boys and men. I think this is finally coming out as the truth.
I like to apply to enter quiz shows. I've only been shortlisted for one. The very first round was a big general knowledge quiz - it looked like there was an even number of men and women doing it, maybe slightly more men. The next round was an audition in the studio - much more women than men were there. And yet when I watch the show, there are always either 2 women and 2 men (there are 4 contestants), or 3 men and 1 woman. Another quiz that I haven't been been shortlisted for does the same thing - always more men than women on the show and I can't even get through the screening process.
Another example is: in Japan a few years ago, it was uncovered that universities and a few high schools had (illegally) been applying reverse gender quotas to entrance exam results. They were doing this because if they didn't, women entrants would easily outnumber men.
My interpretation of all of this is that whole social systems are propping up men artificially so they can succeed because the powers that be KNOW men aren't as intelligent or capable as women.
They can all drop out and still make close to 6 figures in blue collar jobs.
I remember Jorgan Beterson ranting about how boys do badly in school because of "arbitrary rules" (a direct quote) and everyone applauded of course. I'm just sitting there thinking the "Arbitrary rules" are probably stuff like "pick up your own messes" and "stop hitting people." Like the absolute entitlement of men who think that from birth they should get to do whatever they want and all the rules we follow are beneath them, and if they have a crisis due to their own refusal to participate, it's our fault.
I think a lot of this "educational fails boys" stuff is a rude to just defund it entirely.
Girls belong in general education more than boys. Young men are designed for war.
At uni, boys didn't do shit for their grades. They failed nearly every exam, didn't do their homework and every time we had to team up in class to write a paper (or similar stuff) they were lazy, useless fuckbois. Women did all the work and men profited from it. They are entitled and useless. If we had gender separated classes, women would outperform men even more.
Honestly I think it's because girls have more expected of them so they have to be smarter and work harder. Girls are held to a higher standard while for boys it's always "boys will be boys". Girls are more likely to have ADHD or autism and never be diagnosed properly while boys with the same issues are diagnosed. Or maybe women and girls are just naturally smarter.
Lol so much on the quiz show. There was one when I was in highschool. You had to have an interview to be selected. Boys in my class didn't get in. Turns out the show was set up to have pair teams of a boy and a girl. They didn't get enough boys. Closer to the show's date my boy classmates got called in to be on the show. 🤡
I'd Love to see this be the catalyst to liveable wages and less education requirements to jobs.
"Men are dumb uhhh let's pay them 20$ to flip burgers, we're running out of options."
Don't shoot the messenger.
Men and women are fundementaly different, men develop slower and it's true they don't accel in a school setting to the pace of women.
When given 1 extra year to stay behind, and also the ability to physically exercise enough during school, no gap was detected. Male mind develops slower.
Reverse the genders, if men were graduating faster than women, would this be evidence of male supremecy or the patriarchy?
