Advice for those wanting to get into data science or ML!

I understand you have a comp sci degree, but didn't you read in my post the words "beginner" and "intro to programming"? Your comment is like me advising someone who wants to learn maths to start with simple geometry and and algebra, and then you popping up like, "Lol! Good luck devising numerical approximations of the Navier Stokes equations with that!"

Don't you know that people need to start somewhere? Your comment is possibly off-putting to many women who already think programming must be "so difficult", when you can just learn it by working at it a little everyday. I hope that isn't your intention.

When a bunch of men can do it, it's not that hard.

How do you not get the fact that you well intended advice is still flawed? All the ML engineers I work with think this is the wrong way to do ML yet you are insist on me trying to ask what am I not asking.

Again, do you know what ML is? And what does an engineer/data scientist do? Is it just making models (which Kaggle does a job of teaching) day in and out?

Also, I actually belong to an all women team at my work, yes the whole pipeline is based on ML and AI and came back from a hackathon yesterday. I could ask them all to join here perhaps and we will all be saying the same thing. Kaggle isn’t the way. Like same as leetcode can’t make you a software developer. Or, YouTube.

The whole internet is choke full of people who changed careers due to an increase in many misguided platforms. Men are able to thrive only with their levels of over confidence. I have seen women who lost the mental healthy absolutely due to joining in on the trend.

Please tread carefully everyone.

Because nowhere in my post did I say "Advice to everyone, ONLY use Kaggle to learn and never do anything else! Just Kaggle and you'll be a data scientist overnight! There's nothing else to it!" These tutorials and exercises are a great introduction to people who want to start learning Python and ML and don't know where to begin. I would say that the Python course is better explained than the way it was taught on my degree. And the data scientists I interned with competed in these competitions themselves for fun. So many people in the industry are using it.

Your last paragraph is oddly fear mongering. The women I know in tech are well-paid and enjoy their jobs. Mental health can be affected due to discrimination and misogyny from males and so that's why it's important to work for the right company.

Like, if you have a resource you think is better for people to use then suggest it, but don't just say "It's really hard! Women don't do it you will get depression!" Let people use these resources and learn for themselves. There's nothing bad that's going to come from doing a few courses on Kaggle.

One of my friends made a small portfolio of projects, applied to two software engineering entry positions and got offers from both! These tutorials teach you the language, then you would probably need to make your own projects.
