I’m reading “Our Bodies Their Battlefield: War Through the Lives of Women” by Christina Lamb and I’m about halfway through. This stuff isn’t in our history books.
What I’ve learned so far:
There have been MANY, MANY atrocities in MANY regions across the world. In each of the wars listed in the book, almost EVERY girl and woman were raped. Many times gang-raped, kept as a rape slave, and many times died from the rape or immediately after when they killed her. There were RAPE CAMPS, which is exactly what you think it is. In some areas, there were large amounts of women and girls committing suicide after their attacks. We’re talking about hundreds of thousands of women brutalized, at each time of war.
Men and women suffered when they were attacked. However, women were the ones who were raped and sexually tortured.
In many of their cultures, if a woman did survive, her community shunned her which forced her to be isolated with no support, no home and traumatized.
All of these wars mentioned occurred in the last hundred years, some as recent as the 1990s.
I've noticed that men have used a variety of reasons when talking about the brutal rapes of women in war:
It was a war trophy for men to rape the enemies women - just like stealing their land and property
It was used as a form of ethnic cleansing - giving birth to new generations with the colonizers’ genes
It was a way to cause even more harm and destruction
It was a way to “treat” the military for their hardwork and sacrifice
In one war they called them “comfort women” which were just rape slaves - as a way to help the men feel better and maybe not rape other women
It was a way to entice young men into the military - they could be given a “wife”
It has been an UPHILL BATTLE getting rape added as a war crime being able to proscute the rapists, which has all been very recent (like in the last 20 years). At first rape was classified in the same class as petty theft.
There are nowhere near the amount of memorials for the women brutalized and lost, or the ones who HELPED women get out, as the men.
“Rape is the cheapest weapon of war”
I am thoroughly convinced that men are the BIGGEST threat to women. And they aren’t ever going to say it. So we must.
This is why women aren't conscripted in most countries: gov'ts have a reasonable fear women will turn their guns on their fellow male soldiers instead of the enemy.
We. Need. To. Not. Birth. Males. :) At least not at the 50/50 hellhole ration. We need as many women per men as it makes it possible to make the males unable to commit sex-based violence. Then we need to educate female children on male nature. We have the wombs. This stops with women.
