I really enjoyed this book! A great fictional read about women's community, and a lot about midwifery back in nomadic days.
I'll be honest to say that I don't know...maybe any stories from the Bible. This book, The Red Tent, is about the wives of Jacob, and his one daughter, Dinah.
The red tent is the tent that the women retire to when they have their periods, to bleed on rags and straw. It is the place where they can be separate from men and share stories and spend time together.
Beautifully written, fascinating imagery, great characters. Some graphic descriptions of childbirth, but I found the midwifery stories absolutely gripping.
I've always wanted to read this. It also inspired the red tent movement. Women create spaces where women gather and support each other.

I read this long ago and loved it. It opened my eyes to the religious oppression of the nomadic women, as patriarchal Judaism forced women to give up their worship of female deities and female creative superiority. I looked at the Bible differently (and more negatively) after reading this book.
Oh, this one has been on my list for ages, I'll definitely move it to the top now! Thank you for the recommendation.😊
