When I was about 11, I wanted to desexualize myself. I hated objectification. I gravitated towards music where the singers were either male, or didn't show their face much (think, SIA).
Did a little deep dive on some of the music that shaped me growing up, and found a lot of rapists.
- Trent Reznor, from NIN (this hit me the hardest, that someone who could write such emotional music about feeling used, etc, could hurt a woman in this way, and probably think nothing of it)
- Rammstein (bit more obvious)
- Cake (the drummer might have molested a KID
- Marilyn Manson
- The Killers (never proven, but I believe women at this point no matter what, after a group of men lied about a dude sexually assaulting me at work, and the only person who spoke up with the truth was the woman who was there, thank god)
They are all humans, and at the same time, they are all also monsters.

TIL that the majority of the bands I listening growing up with male singers had sexual abusers in them - intentional deep dive.

Almost all the male rock stars from the 70s and 80s were child rapists. Any band from that era who had any kind of "backstage" or "groupie" reputation - the men were having sex with drunk and drugged up young women, and they didnt turn away 17, 16, 15yo girls, or even younger. Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, all of them. Ted Nugent adopted his underage gf to more easily abuse her.
And it's always a good time to remind people that Jack Nicholson once beat the shit out of a prostitute for fun because he knew he could get away with it. And he did.
I'm not familiar with the specifics of most of what you wrote, but I do know that one song by NIN, "Closer to God" is so objectifying that I simply cringe at anyone who is a fan of that song. When I was younger, even in my pickme days, this song disturbed me. I guess the beat of the song can grab people in, but gee, the lyrics make me feel...icky 🙄🙄🙄
I realize that over time I stopped listening to almost all the people of who I had CDs. I want to listen to artists who are good people too. And if I can't find any "good people," then I won't listen to music until I do. I don't think I can "separate the art from the artist" anymore - because I'm not sure it's actually possible.
Same here, I was a huge Backstreet Boys fan lol. Nick Carter has had several rape allegations from metoo. Sad because it seems like he was abused himself and is continuing the cycle, but he's still not taking any responsibility...
I liked Kasabian and Ryan Adams too...probs more. Cause men are shit.
And yep, re: Killers, where there's smoke there's fire. There is no reason for women to lie about this stuff. I unfortunately know this first hand.
The older I get, the more I find it creepy that there are grown men out there in bands that target specifically teenage/tween audiences...
When I was a teen, I remember finding this normal. These are often band members that started being active in their high school days, they spoke about what they knew at the time and all the teenage angst and rebellion spoke to their peers, but then they grew up and ... never changed?
So you end up with male band members in their 30-40's, sometimes even 50's (Jared Leto is now in his 50's I think... he and his band have an entire island where they started some kind of weird cult with members that are fans??) still marketing themselves as the angry voices of teenagers all the while having literally "peaked in high school", often not even in the cheerleader/jock kind of way, more like the "cool, relatable underdogs" that most teens relate to. They've been praised and admired for so long for thinking like angsty teens and it all started when they were 15-16 years of age, then they reached their peak in their 20's and it never stopped... why would they change? It's common enough in real life to deal with overgrown teenagers but when it's their entire brand, the way they rose to fame in the first place, it can't be right!
It's a terrifying deep dive, like when you get a closer look to the mindset of grown adults who used to be child stars. Gives me the ick. So many of them have gotten their way with young groupies... and in the case of boy bands or any kind of band with a massive tween girl following, they have young girls literally throwing themselves at them and fighting for their attention 24/7 which give them a HUGE god complex. When you realize that so many ordinary men already fantasize about getting their way with girls way younger than the age of consent, this HAS to be a recipe for disaster and I wouldn't even be surprised if some of these celebrities had been seeking fame specifically for that sick purpose.
