What does it mean to love a man slightly less than how he loves you?

I've heard that it's ideal for your SO to love you slightly more than you love him. What does it mean? I've never been in this situation. Back when I was unwoke, I had intense crushes on men. Either that or I was not interested in the men who were interested in me. I had never experienced liking a man slightly less than how he likes me.
