I've recently picked up electric guitar and have started taking lessons. My teacher is a man in his 50's who seemed sweet and supportive. However, at my last lesson we were talking about how I'd like to join a band since I can play bass as well and he said, "A hot chick bass player will be in high demand". I was so shocked by this comment that I brushed it off, but I'm intensely uncomfortable with how I was directly objectified to my face and I feel like I should have said something.
Does anyone have advice for what to do if a man says something misogynistic? What should I have said? I feel like the right thing to do is to either look for a different teacher or confront my current teacher about how that comment was inappropriate. I no longer feel safe being in a room with this man after he's revealed that he was thinking of me in that way.
UPDATE: I did tell him it was inappropriate and got an even weirder answer. Currently on the hunt for a new teacher. Thank you all for the wise words 💖
If you confront him, he's just gonna find ways to be sneakier about it. Get a new teacher and ghost/block this guy. Unfortunately he's not wrong and a "fuckable" woman's presence is the goal of almost anything in this world.
It's more prevalent than one might think. If you do join a band with a man, don't be surprised if the man/men seem to gradually care less about music and more about having you in their vicinity.
The point of their music is to attract women and if a woman is already in the band, then 99% of their motivation is gone. Use that to your advantage, however you can.
